Lachen

Lachen, in the far north of Sikkim, serves as the base village for reaching Gurudongmar Lake, its small monastery and traditional Bhutia community giving it a genuine sense of remoteness even relative to other North Sikkim villages. The village's basic guesthouses cater primarily to travellers acclimatising before the demanding early-morning journey to Gurudongmar, given the lake's extreme altitude.

Lachen's position amid dramatic, largely undeveloped mountain terrain gives visitors a strong sense of North Sikkim's genuine remoteness, distinct from the more developed tourist infrastructure found in Gangtok and Pelling further south. The village's traditional dzumsa system of local self-governance, still practised here, reflects a long-standing form of community decision-making distinct from conventional panchayat administration found elsewhere in India.

Lachen's role as gateway to Gurudongmar Lake has shaped its modern tourism identity, though the village's traditional Bhutia community, monastery and unique dzumsa governance system reflect a much longer-standing local cultural history predating this more recent tourist function.

About 120km from Gangtok, roughly 5-6 hours by road; an inner-line permit is required.
