Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary

Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary is a unique protected forest area located in the Jorhat district of Assam and is famous for being the only sanctuary in India dedicated to the conservation of gibbons. Surrounded by lush evergreen forests, the sanctuary is home to the endangered western hoolock gibbon, India's only ape species, along with other wildlife such as capped langurs, slow lorises, elephants, leopards, and numerous bird species. Named after the Hollong tree, a dominant species of the forest, the sanctuary represents one of Assam's most important rainforest ecosystems. Its dense canopy, rich biodiversity, and rare primate species make it a significant destination for wildlife researchers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.

The forests of Hollongapar have been part of Assam's natural rainforest landscape for centuries and have traditionally supported diverse wildlife and indigenous communities. The area was initially reserved as a forest reserve in 1881 during the British period to protect its valuable evergreen forest resources. It was later declared the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary in 1997 to provide dedicated protection for the endangered hoolock gibbon and other species. The sanctuary was renamed Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary to reflect its connection with the native Hollong trees and local ecosystem. Conservation efforts have focused on protecting the forest canopy, preventing habitat loss, and preserving the unique primate population. Today, it remains one of India's most important rainforest habitats and a key centre for gibbon conservation.
