Introduction

Jorhat is a vibrant city in Assam, known as the "Tea Capital of Assam" due to its significant role in the state's tea industry. Located on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, the city is a major centre of culture, education, agriculture, and commerce in Upper Assam. Jorhat serves as the gateway to Majuli, the world's largest river island, and is famous for its tea gardens, historical sites, wildlife attractions, and traditional Assamese culture. With its lush green landscapes, heritage monuments, and connection to the Ahom era, Jorhat attracts travellers seeking nature, history, and authentic Assamese experiences.

History

Jorhat's history is closely linked with the Ahom Kingdom, which ruled Assam for nearly six centuries. The region became an important administrative and cultural centre during the later period of Ahom rule, especially after the capital was shifted to nearby Rangpur (Sivasagar). The name Jorhat means "two markets" — referring to the historic twin bazaars that developed on the banks of the Bhogdoi River. During British rule, Jorhat emerged as an important centre for tea production, trade, and administration, with the establishment of tea estates and research institutions. The city also played a role in India's freedom movement, with several local leaders contributing to the independence struggle. Today, Jorhat continues to be a major hub of Assam's tea industry and a gateway to the cultural treasures of Upper Assam.
