Talatal Ghar was built in the 18th century CE during the reign of Swargadeo Rajeswar Singha of the Ahom Kingdom. Construction began around 1751 and was completed during the rule of later Ahom kings. The palace served as a royal residence as well as a military headquarters, with underground tunnels designed for emergency escape routes and secret movements of soldiers. The name "Talatal Ghar" refers to its multiple levels, including two underground floors and several upper storeys. Built mainly with bricks and a special type of cement mixture, the structure demonstrates the architectural and engineering excellence of the Ahom period. Today, Talatal Ghar stands as one of Assam's most important heritage monuments, preserving the grandeur of the Ahom dynasty's military and royal architecture.
