INS Khukri Memorial

The INS Khukri Memorial on Diu's Fort Road commemorates the Indian Navy frigate sunk by a Pakistani submarine during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, with the loss of over 190 sailors including the ship's captain, who went down with his vessel. The memorial, built in the shape of the ship's hull, honours those who died in one of the Indian Navy's most significant losses of the conflict.

Positioned along Diu's scenic seafront promenade, the memorial draws both those with a specific interest in India's military history and casual visitors walking the coastal road, its stark, dignified design standing in quiet contrast to the more colourful colonial architecture found elsewhere in Diu town.

INS Khukri was torpedoed off the coast of Diu on 9 December 1971 during the war, and the memorial was later established to honour Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla and the crew who perished, an event still commemorated annually by the Indian Navy.
