Introduction

St. Paul's Church is one of the most magnificent churches in Diu, located in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. Dedicated to Saint Paul the Apostle, the church is renowned for its stunning Baroque architecture, intricately carved wooden altar, elegant white façade, and peaceful atmosphere. Built during the Portuguese colonial period, it remains an active place of worship and one of the finest examples of colonial-era religious architecture in India. Its artistic interiors, ornate decorations, and historical significance make it one of Diu's most visited heritage attractions.

History

St. Paul's Church was built by the Portuguese after they established control over Diu in the 16th century. Construction of the present church began in 1601 and was completed in 1610, replacing an earlier chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Designed in the Baroque architectural style, the church features an elaborately carved wooden altar dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, intricate stucco work, and beautifully crafted decorative elements that reflect Portuguese artistic traditions. Over the centuries, the church served as an important religious centre for the Christian community in Diu and has remained well preserved despite the passage of time. Following the integration of Diu into India in 1961, the church continued to function as an active parish while also becoming a prominent heritage monument. Today, St. Paul's Church stands as a lasting symbol of Diu's colonial history, architectural excellence, and religious heritage.
