Junagadh, at the base of the Girnar Hills, is a historic city with a scattering of significant heritage sites including the Uparkot Fort, ancient Buddhist caves and Ashoka's rock edicts, alongside its role as the gateway for pilgrims climbing Girnar. The city's layered history, from ancient Mauryan-era inscriptions through to Nawabi-era architecture, gives it a depth that extends well beyond its function as a base for the Girnar pilgrimage.
Uparkot Fort, with its stepped Buddhist caves and ancient stepwells cut directly into rock, is among the city's most significant single sites, and Junagadh's position as gateway to both Girnar and Gir National Park makes it a practical, well-connected base for exploring this part of Saurashtra.
Junagadh's history stretches back over two thousand years, with Ashoka's rock edicts at the base of Girnar among the earliest surviving inscriptions anywhere in India, and the city later served as the capital of a significant princely state until 1947.
