Narkanda is a quieter hill town beyond Shimla, known primarily for the Hatu Peak viewpoint nearby and as one of Himachal's earliest developed skiing areas, offering a more low-key winter sports experience than the busier resorts around Manali. Apple orchards line much of the surrounding hillsides, and the town's relative distance from Shimla keeps it noticeably less crowded even during peak tourist season.
The climb to Hatu Peak, topped by an old temple and offering panoramic Himalayan views, is one of the more accessible short treks in the region, achievable as a half-day outing for visitors based in Narkanda.
Narkanda's development as a modest ski destination dates back to the early-to-mid 20th century, making it one of the older established winter sports areas in the state, predating much of the larger-scale development around Manali and Solang.
December to February for skiing; March to June and September to November for pleasant hiking weather.
