Rohtang Pass

Rohtang Pass is a spectacular high-altitude mountain pass located in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, connecting the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul-Spiti Valley. Situated at an elevation of around 13,050 feet (3,978 metres) in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas, the pass is famous for its snow-covered landscapes, glaciers, and breathtaking mountain views. Known as the "Gateway to Lahaul-Spiti," Rohtang Pass has been a popular destination for adventure seekers, photographers, and nature lovers. The pass offers opportunities for activities such as snow play, trekking, and sightseeing while showcasing the dramatic beauty of the Himalayan terrain.

Rohtang Pass has been an important mountain route for centuries, serving as a traditional passage connecting the Kullu region with the remote valleys of Lahaul, Spiti, Ladakh, and parts of Central Asia. The name "Rohtang" is derived from the Persian words meaning "pile of corpses," referring to the historical dangers faced by travellers crossing the difficult terrain and harsh weather conditions. The pass played an important role in trade and cultural exchanges between Himalayan communities. During British rule, it became significant as a route for administration and exploration in the Himalayan frontier regions. In modern times, Rohtang Pass gained importance as a tourism destination and strategic route. The construction of the Atal Tunnel in 2020 provided an alternative all-weather connection between Manali and Lahaul, reducing dependence on the seasonal pass. Today, Rohtang remains one of Himachal Pradesh's most iconic natural landmarks.
